Published November 10, 2014

Over 6,000 pounds of food and an additional $4,800 for purchase of food were delivered by the scouts, along with other household necessities and toiletries, to Operation Breakthrough. Together, we helped complete Reat’s Eagle Scout project and continue his passion for helping this great organization.

On July 18th, the Theodore Naish Scout Reservation hosted the Reat Griffin Underwood Memorial BB Gun Range dedication ceremony for the “Reat Griffin Underwood Memorial BB Gun Range.” Reat would have been an Eagle Scout in a few months — the highest rank that a young man can earn in Boy Scouts. And although he personally won’t be able to use the gun range, many scouts will.

Reat and Popeye are no longer with us, but that doesn’t mean their legacy can’t live on. The Boy Scouts of America were listed as one of the recipients of memorial gifts. “They told us that they were building this BB gun range, they already started building the BB gun range, and that it was about to be finished — and that seemed extremely appropriate,” Mindy said. “We all agreed at the same time that the BB gun range would have meant a lot to Reat.” Reat would have been an Eagle Scout in a few months — the highest rank that a young man can earn in Boy Scouts. And although he personally won’t be able to use the gun range, many scouts will. Read more here.

Reat Griffin Underwood Memorial BB Gun Range

A group of 20 boys, each around 8-years-old, listened to a brief safety presentation, don safety goggles, and with the help of their fathers and other adult leaders, open fire at paper targets with “BB gun” rifles shooting BBs. They’ll be just some of 2,600 scouts to use this brand-new facility this year. The “Reat Griffin Underwood Memorial BB Gun Range” is located at the Boy Scouts of America’s Camp Naish in Bonner Springs, Kansas. The range allows 8-year-old Bear Scouts a chance to learn firearms safety and shooting skills under supervision, with BBs. The dedication ceremony for the range will be on July 18th. Read more here.

As a “lasting reminder of the strength of the brotherhood of the Boy Scouts of America,” this Missing Man formation flyover happened at the Scouting 500 event this past weekend at the Kansas Speedway in honor of Reat and Popeye. What an amazing thing to see. Thank you to the Boy Scouts for all your endless support – it means the world.

We have been very blessed to make Scouting part of our lives. Construction is underway on a new improved BB gun range at Camp Nash in honor of Reat and Popeye. The “Reat Griffin Underwood Memorial BB Gun Range” will be a tribute to our family members as well as an outstanding facility to train Scouts on the proper use of firearms. We appreciate any donation you may make to this effort!
